The unwanted excess materials generated by an organization which must be disposed of either by discharging to the environment or shipping it off-site for processing (such as recycling, treatment, or disposal).

The waste generated by an organization can generally be classified as follows:

• Hazardous -- Solid waste, contained gas, or sludge waste whose properties are dangerous or potentially harmful to human health or the environment.
• Residual/Non-Hazardous -- Non-hazardous materials that result from the production of goods and products, such as organic chemicals, inorganic chemicals, primary iron and steel, plastics and resin, stone, clay, glass, concrete, pulp, paper, food.
• Municipal -- Everyday items that are used and then discarded, such as product packaging, grass clippings, furniture, clothing, bottles, food scraps, newspapers. This waste is generated by homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses. You can think of municipal waste as items that can go into the standard rubbish or garbage truck.
