Define Hazard Classes

There are a variety hazard classification systems is use. The systems used by your site are determined by the regulatory agencies and the management procedures that govern your operations. The ARCHIBUS MSDS application provides the ability to define the classification systems used by your facility and can have up to 3 levels. This form is used to define hazard classes -- a subdivision of the Hazard Classification System.

  1. System -- The top level in the hierarchy -- defined on the Define Hazard Classification System form.
  2. Classes-- The second level in the system -- defined on the this form
  3. Categories-- The bottom level in the hierarchy - Defined on the Define Hazard Categories form.

Log into Web Central and navigate to the Define Hazard Classes task by selecting:

When the view is first presented, a tree panel displays the currently defined Classification Systems. In order to add a class, activate the "Add New" button by first selecting the classification system under which you want the class. To edit an existing class you need to expand the tree and select the class to edit. In both cases, the system presents an edit form for entering the data. The columns in the edit form are shown in the table below along with a definition of the information to be entered.

Hazard Classification Class

(Required Field) The identifier for the class within the classification system. The classification system together with the class must be unique. Having a compound key means that you could have the same class in many different classifications systems. If you look at the systems shipped with the product you will notice that Flammability is class under both the HMIS and NFPA systems.

Hazard Class Description

A free form text description of the class.

Add New Hazard Class

To add a new hazard class:

  1. In the Classification Systems and Classes tree panel, select the system to which the class belongs.
  2. Click on "Add New" in the Classification Systems and Classes tree panel.
  3. The system will then display a blank editing form to the right of the tree panel.
  4. Enter information about the class. See the table above for definitions of each of the fields.
  5. Click "Save" to save the new data. To discard the new record, click "Cancel". If you are adding multiple classes to a system, you can select "Save and Add New" which will save the record just entered and open a new blank record.

Edit Hazard Class

To edit data for an existing hazard class:

  1. In the Classification Systems and Classes tree panel, expand the system to display its associated classes. Select the class you wish to edit.
  2. The system will then display an editing form to the right of the tree panel that is populated with the selected class's data.
  3. Modify information about the class as needed. See the table above for definitions of each of the fields.
  4. Click on "Save"to save the changes. To discard the changes to the record, click "Cancel". You can also add new classes to this system, by selecting "Save and Add New". This will save the class just entered and open a new, blank class record.

Delete Hazard Class

To delete data for an existing hazard class:

  1. In the Classification Systems and Classes tree panel, expand the system to display its associated classes. Select the class you wish to delete
  2. The system will then display an editing form to the right of the tree panel that is populated with the selected class's data.
  3. Click on "Delete". The system will display a dialog box showing the record to be deleted. Click "OK" to delete the record or "Cancel" to keep the record.

Note: ARCHIBUS performs a cascading delete so when you delete a class, ARCHIBUS will automatically delete all associated categories as well. You will not have the ability to "Undo" this delete, so make sure you really want to remove the class and all of it's categories.
