Importing Industry-Standard Room Categories and Types

Rather than define your own room categories and room types, you may wish to use classifications that have been defined by space planning organizations.

With the Import Room Categories and Types task, you can import room categories and types that are developed by the following organizations:

GSA - General Services Administration Based on the GSA's National Business Office Space Assignment Policy, the Spatial Data Management (SDM) program is GSA's national effort to create, update, and maintain its spatial data and CAD floor plans to accurate reflect the national federally-owned inventory. http://www.gsa.gov/portal/content/103735
OSCRE - Open Standards Consortium for Real Estate OSCRE offers the Space Classification Code List (SPCL) which includes room types typically found in commercial office-type properties. This lists is coordinated with standards published by BOMA and IFMA. http://www.oscre.org

IPD - Investment Property Databank Limited

 IPD offers the Space Code to help property professionals deliver high quality performance information. http://www.ipd.com
US Department of Education/Institute of Educational Sciences The Post-secondary Education Facilities Inventory and Classification Manual (FICM) describes standard practices for initiating, conducting, reporting, and maintaining a postsecondary institutional facilities inventory. http://nces.ed.gov/pubs2006/ficm

Preview the list of standards

Before importing a standard, you can review it.

  1. Load the Import Room Categories and Types task.
  2. Click a standard, such as GSA or OSCRE.
  3. In the right pane, ARCHIBUS lists the records that will be imported, displaying each record's identifying value and a brief description.
  4. Scroll through the list of room categories to see the classifications for this standard.
  5. Click on a room category to see its component room types.

Import the list of standards

After you have reviewed the standards and decided on the standard to implement, you can import the standard into the Room Categories and Room Types tables.

  1. Delete all the records in the Room Types and Room Categories tables.
  2. Load the Import Room Categories and Types task.
  3. Click on the standard that you want to import.
  4. Click Import.
