satellite accumulation area

A satellite accumulation area (SAA) is a designated area where wastes are gradually accumulated and stored temporarily until they are moved to the official storage area. The satellite accumulation area must be near a process or location that generates hazardous waste, and must be under the control of the operator of the process that is generating the waste.

Typically, while waste in a satellite accumulation area is still subject to regulations, the regulations pertaining to SAAs can be less stringent than those to pertaining to standard storage areas. For example, inspections may not be required, waste can be transferred between multiple satellite accumulation areas, and multiple types of hazardous wastes can be stored in the same satellite accumulation area.

Once waste in a satellite accumulation area reaches a certain quantity, it must be transferred to the standard hazardous waste storage area.

Once a hazardous waste leaves an SAA, it must be destined for a central accumulation area, or for final treatment or disposal.

Waste that is in a satellite accumulation area has a Status of 'Accumulated.'
