Overview: Review MSDSs

Integral to the MSDS application is the ability to retrieve, publish, and disseminate information about the composition, characteristics, hazards, and handling requirements for potentially hazardous materials. Historically, MSDSs were only available as hardcopy printouts in binders at the location where they were used or stored. Upgrading to a computerized, data centric system provides greater accessibility and clarity. Another advantage of an automated, centralized information source for MSDS information is that employees, contractors, safety engineers, and emergency responders always have access to up-to-date information. The ARCHIBUS MSDS application is designed to address the regulatory requirements for the content of an MSDS as well as the requirements for providing access to the MSDSs. The Review MSDS process has tasks to address a variety of information needs. Original, manufacturer supplied MSDSs can be retrieved on line or printed for inclusion in hardcopy binders. MSDS data related to the location and quantity of the material are useful in emergency situations where knowledge of the hazards might determine how emergency personnel respond. Quantity and location information are also key in producing reportable inventories of hazardous material. A database of MSDS information also facilitates the review and updating of the data to make sure that the most current information is presented. The database also makes it possible to display information on maps and floor plans to enhance communication.
