Highlight Rooms in your Floor Plan by One Property

It is often useful to see rooms in a floor plan highlighted by various properties, such as department assignment, vacancy status, or room type. Visually seeing a room on the floor plan, its access to other features of the floor, its adjacent rooms, and so forth, can help you make better decisions about how you use your rooms. The following image shows a room plan highlighted by room category. The legend lets you know the category that each color represents.

The Space Console offers two types of highlights:

Although both solid fill and border highlights are available, when highlighting by one property it is recommended that you use the solid fill highlight. Use the border highlight when you want to highlight by two properties.

Note: Border highlights are not used when exporting to PDF or DOCX. Border highlights are used only for viewing on screen.

Showing the Legend for the Highlight Color

To determine the value that each color represents, click the triangle next to the Highlights option. The system displays a legend listing each value and its associated color. You can move this legend to anywhere on the screen, as shown in the above image.

Additionally, for properties that are listed in the Space Console's tabs, you can make this property the active tab. For example, you can show the Room Categories tab when the drawing is highlighted by Room Category. You can consult the tab to see the values that the highlight colors represent, as well as see information such as room count or total area for each category.

Procedure

  1. Load the Space Console and choose Space mode.
  2. The middle section of the Space Console lists the floor plan drawings.
  3. Click the selection boxes for the drawings you wish to load.
  4. Set the property for which you want to highlight by completing the Highlights option in the floor plan ribbon. The system solid-fills rooms according to the colors associated with the values of this property. Areas without colors are not assigned to this property.
  5. Show the legend by clicking the triangle next to the Highlights option. Place the legend at your desired position on the screen.

Changing the Highlight Color

The colors used to highlight rooms are stored in the table defining the properties by which you are highlighting. For example, the colors for department highlights are stored in the Departments table, and the colors for room category highlights are stored in the Room Categories table.

In the above image, suppose you do not like the highlight color for the OFFICE room category. To change this color, you must edit the OFFICE record in the Room Categories table. To change the color, you locate the OFFICE record in the Room Categories table, and enter a new color for the Highlight Pattern - field. ACAD. You can make this edit directly from the Space Console's Room Categories tab, or you can load the Background Data / Define Room Types task and make the edit there. When you return to the Space Console and run the highlight again, the highlight will use your new color.
