Standard Single-User Installation

Overview

Run this standard single-user installation procedure as your first step to work with:

Note: The single-user installation described in this topic is also the first step for the small workgroup configuration. See Single-Server Deployment for a Small Workgroup: Smart Client-Only Installation.

This ARCHIBUS Web Central and Smart Client Setup program installs:

Installation Procedure

You must have administrator privileges to run the Setup program.

(1) Uninstall previous ARCHIBUS software, if installed.

If you have previous copies of ARCHIBUS Web Central or of Web Central and the Smart Client, uninstall them.

You do not need to uninstall any previous copy of the ARCHIBUS Windows Client/Server program.

(2) Install any local database servers

By default, the Smart Client application starts with support of the Sybase runtime engine. If you are going to use the full Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere or the Microsoft SQL Server Express database programs, install them before running the ARCHIBUS Setup program.

The Smart Client Setup program detects them, and updates the location of the Sybase ASA database program for the Home attribute and sets the Installed attribute to true for the corresponding installed database programs in the \SmartClient\SmartClient.Common.dll.config file.

Later, a user can decide which database program to use by choosing the desired project in the Preferences dialog.

<SybaseASA Installed="false">
<ServiceName="SybaseASA_for_ARCHIBUS_<SmartclientMajorVersion>"
Home="C:\Program Files\Sybase\SQL Anywhere 9\win32"

<MsSqlExpress Installed="false"
…>

Please refer to Installing Microsoft SQL Server Express if you are installing that server.

(3) Copy the license from the license disk

If you have a license disc, copy the ai-licenses.bin file from the root of that disc to the My Documents folder on your computer, where the ARCHIBUS Setup programs can access it.

If you received your license file from an attachment to an email, save the attachment to the My Documents folder.

(4) Install ARCHIBUS Web Central and Smart Client program

If your workstation does not have the required Windows Installer or .Net framework, the Setup program will stop and present a message to that effect. You can install these utilities from the links on the ARCHIBUS Setup Path. You can also use Windows Explorer to navigate to the dependencies folder on the DVD and install them manually.

Testing your Installation

Testing the Smart Client

To run ARCHIBUS Smart Client:

The ARCHIBUS Smart Client will start.

On startup, the Smart Client will start the Sybase runtime database with the sample HQ project, and start the Jetty application server.

The program will sign you in and show the Process Navigator on the left side of the screen.

Testing Web Central

Once you have started the Smart Client, the application server and database are already running. You can sign in from a Web browser. To do so:

Demonstration Accounts

To sign in, use one of the demonstration user accounts. For the list of available accounts, see Demonstration User Accounts and Licensing.

To sign in with a different user account, choose the "Sign Out" button, then choose the "Sign In" button to see the "Sign In" dialog. If you check the "Remember my credentials on this workstation" selection, the program signs you in to the Smart Client and the Smart Client Extensions automatically.

Restarting the Smart Client

The program starts the database server and the application server as separate console processes that continue to run if you exit and restart the Smart Client or the Smart Client Extensions. If you log off of your workstation or restart it, then the Smart Client will restart these application server and database server processes when you restart the program.

If you ever want to stop the database and application servers yourself, press the "Stop" button, which invokes the Stop Servers command.

To restart the servers from within the program, press the "Start" button, which invokes the Start Servers command.

Configuring AutoCAD or Revit

If you have AutoCAD or Revit installed, you can configure the ARCHIBUS Extension for AutoCAD or the ARCHIBUS Extension for Revit. To do so:

If you use multiple CAD applications (say both AutoCAD and Revit), set the preference before you use each application. You do not need to restart the Smart Client.

If you start AutoCAD or Revit very quickly after changing the CAD Application preference, the preference will not yet be written to the registry, and the Extensions will not load. If this happens, just restart AutoCAD or Revit to pick up the registry changes.

Note: To use the DWG Editor, a user must sign into an account that has its Use CAD/BIM License? property set to "Yes - Extensions". Web Central users can see whether they have this license from the My Profile command. Administrators can set which users have this license from the System Administration / ARCHIBUS System Administration / ARCHIBUS Administrator / Add or Edit Users task.

Installing the Smart Client DWG Editor

For licensing reasons, the Smart Client DWG Editor ships on its own disc.

Note The Smart Client should be installed before you install the Smart Client DWG Edtior.

To install DWG Editor on this workstation:

  1. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the dwg-editor-smart-client folder on the ARCHIBUS Smart Client DWG Editor disc.
  2. Run the setup.exe program.
  3. Launch the DWG Editor from the Start/Programs menu.
  1. Launch Smart Client.
  2. Invoke the Preferences command.
  3. Set the CAD Application preference to "DWG Editor."

Note: To use the DWG Editor, a user must sign into an account that has its Use CAD/BIM License? property set to "Yes - DWG Editor".

Installing License Files for Add-On Orders

Some orders are add-on orders in which you add additional seats of the product, but do not change versions or revisions of the software. For instance, if you had 10 Application Connection Point licenses, but then add five additional seats in an add-on order; ARCHIBUS, Inc. will send you a new license file with all of the old licenses, plus the five new ones.

In this case, you do not need to reinstall the software. Copy the ai-licenses.bin file to your \archibus\WEB-INF\config folder and restart the application server.

Uninstalling ARCHIBUS

To uninstall ARCHIBUS:
